#TerribleTuesday and the Favorite Weekday

“What is your favorite day of the week?”

I’ll admit, some mastermind forums cause my jaw to drop more than it should. The former was one such question a business owner loved to ask of people, because it garnered “interesting” answers.

I sat back and thought “who cares?” People have their reasons, and as long as they are getting their job done, why does their favorite day matter?

This falls squarely into what I call the Clever Question category. It’s one of those questions where the answer needs to be clever, and the interviewer grabs a bag of fairy dust, and pulls out meaning from the result.

But this needs a twist, and there is a way to make this better.

 Start with:

“What day of the week do you tend to find yourself most productive?”

And here is some suggested follow ups:

“Is that a hard and fast rule?”

“Why do you think that is?”

“Do you have a process in place that supports productivity on this particular day, based on your experience?”

“What tools have you put in place, to support other days of the week?”

The best interview questions rely on getting to the nuts and bolts about how people do their job. Where they learned their methodology, their work arounds. Etc.

The best interview questions never rely on assumptions.

Find one assumption in your interview process and find a way to make it into a solid skill-based question. Notice the change in conversation. I think you’ll find a much more productive and useable answer.
